The Macallan – Select Oak – August 6th, 2010

The Macallan Select Oak is a single malt scotch from the Islay region of Scotland.  This 1 litre bottling was purchased from the duty-free store at Heathrow Airport in London England for $56.00 CAD and was tasted 6 August 2010 at PWS Victoria.  It is not as smoky as other whiskies so this is a great introduction to the category of whisky and is a good, reasonably priced beginner’s Scotch. While this single malt uses three different casks including sherry- or bourbon-seasoned American oak, a higher portion comes from first-fill sherry oak that are selected by The Macallan’s Master of Wood, George Espie. This bottling has a sweet nose marked with vanilla and butterscotch that follows through to the taste where it is backed by spice. It finishes semi-sweet and pleasurably long.
